It was springtime as I drove along the Talimena Scenic Drive, an enchanting experience for photographers and nature lovers alike. Stretching through the breathtaking Ouachita Mountains (pronounced ‘wash-ita’), this picturesque highway showcases a vibrant tapestry of blooming wildflowers, lush greenery and stunning vistas that change with the season. As the landscape awakens from winter slumber, the drive becomes a canvas of colours, presenting endless opportunities for capturing the beauty of nature.
A Roadtrip To Remember
It had been 3 weeks since the start of my roadtrip. I had racked up 13 states and just under three thousand miles so far. I had photographed Little River Falls and Clarkson Covered Bridge in Alabama, Caddo Lake State Park, the Stockyards and Water Garden in Fort Worth plus Big Bend National Park in Texas, as well as Carlsbad Caverns National Park in New Mexico. Not to mention being sand blasted in Roswell. I was currently heading north towards Oklahoma which would be state number 14 this trip and new State number 4 for me. So far my roadtrip planning had gone very well! But I was now heading to a road that I’d read is closed in winter and was due to open a few days previously – the Talimena Scenic Drive.

Talimena Scenic Drive is a breathtaking 54-mile National Scenic Byway that winds through the Ouachita Mountains, connecting Talihina, Oklahoma, to Mena, Arkansas. Known for its stunning views and lush landscapes, this route is particularly popular in the spring when nature bursts into vibrant colours. So that was my destination and I had a plan. MrsFaceless loves photographing ‘Fall color’, or Autumn colours as I would say, so I would be scoping this out as a possible location for either late 2025 or 2026.

The Beauty of Springtime: A Photographer’s Paradise
Spring along Talimena Scenic Drive is like nature’s version of a refreshing reboot. As I started the climb up to the top the scenery came alive. I had several hours to before sunset and I was making good use of that time to find botht he perfect sunset location, as well as a good sunrise location. Not to mention finding somewhere to park up overnight where, if i could stay awake, I would take advantage of the forecast clear skies to get some astrophotography in.
Seasonal Changes in the Landscape
As winter fades away, the landscape undergoes a spectacular transformation. Trees that were once bare burst forth with fresh green leaves, while wildflowers blanket the ground in vibrant colours. What I found upon arrival was a gloriously green vibrance to teh landscape. And a chill in the air, In fact, quite a chill. That wasn’t necessarily a bad thing as the changing weather can also create dreamy fog in the mornings or golden light at sunset, making for a stunning photo opportunities.
Key Locations for Capturing Stunning Spring Photos
While the entire 54 mile length of Talimena Scenic Drive is a visual treat, there are some standout spots that should be on every photographer’s must visit list.
Popular Scenic Overlooks
Undeniably, the overlooks along the drive are where magic happens. These vantage points offer sweeping views of the mountains and valleys below. Some favorites include the Queen Wilhelmina State Park overlook, which provides a breathtaking panoramic view of the Ozarks, and the famous Lover’s Leap. I was specifically looking for locations to provide a realistic view I could share with MrsFaceless of what we could expect if we returned with the intent of spending a few days photographing here. My stand outs were Sunset Point Vista, Panorama Vista and Grand View Vista for reasons I have listed below.
Overlook, Noverlook
My constant theme with visiting overlooks is, well, the lack of ‘look’. Whilst many of the Talimena Scenic Drive overlooks were great to stand and soak in experience, only a few were clear of overgrowth which blocked a clear view. This may have been due to it being early spring and no vegetation management had yet happened. This is also why I ended up shooting at the particular places I did. When photographing sunrise and sunset an obscured view makes for a disappointing experience. This makes scouting all the more important!
Where I Photographed – And Why
Sunset
For my sunset shoot I had driven up and down a fair length of the Talimena Scenic Drive before I ultimately settled on somewhere that should have given me a clue – Sunset Point Vista. Hmmm. A few overlooks I simply didn’t like, a few were ‘noverlooks’ but this choice had me facing where both the sun was setting, there were silhouetted hills and, importantly, I was also able to get the few clouds that were in the sky into my image.
Night Time
I spent the night, a very cold night may I add, at Panorama Vista. After a fair amount of research this had been marked as a likely spot for a good sunrise. It is also a short distance from the main road, affording it some privacy. With clear skies being forecast my thoughts were of astro photography and the last thing I wanted was for any car headlights to ruin a long exposure. As it turned out, I got some nice star trail video….but then fell asleep. Oops.
Sunrise
Sunrise was anything but. I mean, yes the sun rose. However, it was fully obscured by dense cloud which was nowhere to be found in the weather forecast. Along with the cloud came wind and some extremely chilly temperatures. However, as sometimes bad weather is good weather, I persevered to get an early morning shot at Panorama Vista to show MrsFaceless. I then returned to the car and turned on the heater, the heated seat, dug my gloves out and spent the next ten minutes shivering. All for a photo!
Early Morning
My next stop was at Lennox Vista. It was around 6.30 am and, as I sat in the car looking out, all I could think of was one thing. Hot coffee. However, something caught my eye. So I forced myself out into the cold to take a shot. What had caught my eye was the layering of the hills as i stared into the distance. With the sun just starting to become visible, the clouds were acting as a softbox to cast a beautiful light over the rolling scenery. And that shot ended up being my favourite shot of this part of my adventure.
Urban Decay In Nature
Grand View Vista provides a very wide view of the surrounding landscape below. But, to me at least, was a little repetitive with no leading lines or foreground interest. But what caught my eye was the graffiti. I’m not one for graffiti on rocks and this does seem to be an area where the rocks and the road have lost that battle. Badly. At least it is concentrated here, But in all honesty, it does make for an interesting experience. With what must be graffiti over graffiti over graffiti, there is something quite raw and arty about the whole look. It’s no Banksy and not necessarily aesthetically pleasing, but it does bring a gritty, urban decay feel to the middle of nature. Not sure if that’s what Arkansas is going for though.
