RB Ricketts Falls In Autumn At Ricketts Glen State Park PA

I visited Ricketts Glen in 2024 on my own and had a blast photographing the waterfalls on the Ganoga Glen side. So this autumn, it was time to give MrsFaceless the Falls Loop experience. This time we would be concentrating on shooting the waterfalls on the Glen Leigh side of Ricketts Glen.

Overview of Ricketts Glen State Park

Ricketts Glen State Park, a gem nestled in the picturesque landscape of Pennsylvania, boasts breathtaking views and a refreshing escape into nature. The park is famed for its stunning waterfalls and lush forests, making it a favorite for hikers, photographers and anyone looking to recharge their batteries. With over 13,000 acres of natural beauty, it’s basically a buffet of scenic views, and you’ve got a front-row seat. It is an ideal location for capturing the essence of the park through photography. In this article, we will explore the best practices for photographing the Glen Leigh side of the Falls Trail, offering insights on preparation, timing, techniques and essential gear to help you make the most of your photographic adventure.

Location and Accessibility

Ricketts Glen is situated in Luzerne and Sullivan Counties. It is easily accessible by car via major highways with ample parking available and the trailheads well-marked. If you’re thinking about taking public transport, well, let’s just say you might want to rethink that road trip and get your hiking shoes on instead.

History and Significance

Founded in 1942, Ricketts Glen has a rich history. The park was named for members of the Ricketts family who settled near Lake Ganoga in the mid 1850s and built a small hunting lodge and tavern on the shore of the lake. The family was not aware of the presence of the waterfalls on Kitchen Creek until 1865 when guests of the hotel wandered down the creek to go fishing. After serving in the Union Army during the Civil War, Robert Bruce Ricketts purchased most of the land which now makes up the park. The Ricketts family expanded the hotel, built a lumber mill and developed trails in the area to allow the waterfalls to be visited as attractions.

Private Park, State Park..Soon To Be National Park?

In 1913 the area was opened to the public and operated as a private park until it converted to State control after the Ricketts family sold the land. It opened as a state park in 1943. A plan was in place in 1935 to convert Ricketts Glen to a National Park, however funding was sidetracked. Due to financial hardships of the Great Depression and World War 2, the National Park plan never coming to fruition. The park was designated as a National Natural Landmark in 1969. So, when you’re snapping photos, remember you’re capturing more than just stunning landscapes; you’re preserving a piece of history!

As of December 2025, there are a little over 50 suggestions for new National Parks. Ricketts Glen is one of those.

How Many Waterfalls?

There is a discrepency in the number of reported named waterfalls in the park. Twenty-one waterfalls are shown on the trail map, with either 22 or 24 named elsewhere. Regardless, the 21 named waterfalls in the park are said to have been given their titles by Robert Bruce Ricketts. More than a dozen of the waterfalls were given Native American names and several others bear the names of members or friends of the Ricketts family.

The Chosen Few

There are 8 waterfalls alone on the Glen Leigh side of the Ricketts Glen Falls Trail. It was an overcast day, perfect for waterfall photography and we were walking the loop in a clockwise direction. Having been delayed by an enforced detour due to a road closure, we suspected we would only have time to shoot 3 or 4 of the waterfalls. So off we set, along the Highland Trail, through Midway Crevasse and then took the shortcut. This cuts out Onondaga Falls, but drops us right out at our first destination, F.L. Ricketts Falls.

F.L.Ricketts Falls is the second waterfall as you walk clockwise around the Falls Loop. At 38 feet and with jutting rocks, it makes for a very picturesque waterfall. The colours were vibrant when we visited in the first week of November and there was also a substantial water flow.

Huron Falls

Huron Falls is a 41ft drop, flanked by a stone staircase, adding just an extra bit of charm. Sadly, as you can see from the view up the creek in the above photo, there was an inordinate amount of deadfall. Maybe 2 weeks prior to our visit a storm had ripped through north eastern Pennsylvania, knocking down a lot of trees. I’m not sure if the Park ever clears deadfall which isn;t obstructing the pathways.

Ozone Falls In Autumn At Ricketts Glen State Park PA

Ozone Falls

This waterfall features a multi-tiered drop totalling 60 feet, creating a stunning visual effect as water cascades down smooth stones. Surrounded by lush greenery, the falls are ranked highly as part of the larger waterfall loop trail, which enhances accessibility and invites curious photographers to capture its essence from different angles. As mentioned previously, the deadfall around the Falls Loop was plentiful. This adds both to the charm as well as increasing the difficulty of capturing that special photo. Embrace the chaos, as they say. Although that is easier to say than do more often than not!
From furthre down the creek the view would have been better had the water not been so deep and fast flowing. As it was, both MrsFaceless and I particularly liked this waterfall with its multiple drops and chutes creating plenty of interest.

R B Ricketts Falls

R B Ricketts Falls is one of the crown jewels of Ricketts Glen State Park, cascading gracefully over a rugged cliff into a serene pool below. Standing at 36 feet tall, it’s not the tallest in the park, but it sure knows how to steal the show with its enchanting scenery and soothing sounds of nature. Perfect for the avid photographer or the casual hiker looking for a tranquil spot to unwind, Ricketts Falls is a must-visit.

Due to the sheer volume of rain that had recently fallen, we were graced with a beautiful double falls. The drawback, one more, was the need to ’embrace the chaos’!

The Importance of the Falls Trail

The Falls Trail is the main attraction in Ricketts Glen, weaving through the park and providing a front-row seat to the captivating waterfalls. If that isn’t a solid reason to grab your camera, I don’t know what is!

Unique Features of the Trail

The Falls Trail isn’t just a nice stroll through the woods, it’s a veritable highlight reel of nature’s best work. Expect to encounter waterfalls varying from dainty trickles to roaring cascades, all while surrounded by vibrant foliage that changes beautifully with the seasons.

Trail Difficulty and Experience Levels

So, how much hiking are we talking about? The Falls Trail is roughly 7.2 miles long and can be rated moderate to difficult, depending on your fitness level and familiarity with hiking. If you’ve got toddlers in tow or are more of a “couch potato turned nature enthusiast,” you might want to pace yourself. But fear not! There are shorter loop trails available for those who prefer a gentler trek.

Preparing for the Photography Adventure

Ready to capture that perfect shot? Let’s make sure you’re geared up for an epic photography outing to the Glen Leigh side of the Falls Trail.

Researching the Glen Leigh Area

Before you lace up those hiking boots, it pays to do a little homework. Spend some time looking up photos and reviews of the Glen Leigh area online. You’ll want to know where the best viewpoints are located to set up your tripod (or just your phone if you’re keeping it casual). Check out local photography groups or forums for tips and tricks to get the most out of your visit.

What to Bring on the Trail

To avoid the classic “oops, I forgot my memory card” moment, make a checklist of essentials. Bring your camera, of course, but don’t forget extra batteries, a sturdy tripod, and plenty of snacks!

Trail Maps and Accessibility

Before you lace up your hiking boots, grab a trail map! Ricketts Glen State Park has well-marked trails, but with several options, it helps to know where you’re going. Be mindful of accessibility; some paths are more challenging than others, so check if you want a leisurely stroll or a heart-pumping adventure.

Pro Tip: always have a hard copy of the map; those apps can be as reliable as a cat on a leash!

Safety Tips for Hikers

Stay safe while you’re out there frolicking in nature! Remember to wear sturdy footwear – nobody likes a slip and fall. Bring plenty of water to stay hydrated because dehydration is less fun than it sounds. Check the weather to avoid being caught in a surprise rainstorm (unless you’re into that sort of thing). Lastly, let someone know your hiking route for good measure.

Is the Falls Trail suitable for all skill levels of hikers and photographers?

While the Falls Trail features stunning views, it can be challenging due to its steep terrain and wet conditions. Ideally you should have moderate hiking experience. However, photographers of all skill levels can enjoy capturing the scenery along the way.

Best Time of Day for Photography

Timing is everything, especially when it comes to photography. So, let’s talk strategy to ensure you get those jaw-dropping shots of the waterfalls.

Golden Hour Benefits

Ahh, the golden hour. Don’t let that sweet early morning or late afternoon light pass you by! During these times, the sun casts a warm, gentle glow over the landscape, making everything look like a scene from a movie. For capturing the waterfalls, the soft lighting can help minimize harsh shadows and give that dreamy, ethereal vibe to your photos.

Seasonal Considerations

Each season brings a unique charm to Ricketts Glen. For vibrant fall foliage, visit in October. For a winter wonderland, head there after a snowstorm. Yes, it is possible to do winter photography at some of these waterfalls, but the Falls Trail is only open to properly equipped ice climbers and hikers. No joke. It can be slippery on the trails in summer. Imagine negotiating steps with several inches of thick ice next to a drop! Spring is great for enjoying rushing waterfalls as snow melts, while summer offers lush greenery. Keep in mind that the best time for photographing waterfalls is after a good rain. Just don’t forget your waterproof gear!

Techniques for Capturing the Glen Leigh Side

Framing and Composition Tips

To ensure your photos stand out, composition is key when it comes to landscape photography. Use the rule of thirds to guide your framing, placing points of interest off-center for a more dynamic look. Leading lines, such as winding roads or rivers, can draw the viewer’s eye into the frame. Know your camera. Understand metering modes, ISO, aperture and shutter speed to gives your image a good exposure. Know how to get sharp photos. If you’re on a tripod think about bracketing exposures for hdr to gather all of the dynamic range information on your sensor. If taking a photo handheld then read up on the reciprocal rule.

Experiment

And don’t shy away from experimenting. Try shooting during different times of day to capture varied lighting. Changing orientation between portrait vs landscape allows for perfect framing of differing compositions. Remember, it’s not just about what you’re photographing, it’s how you photograph it to create dramatic landscape photographs!

Utilizing Natural Light

Natural lighting is like the magic wand of photography, so wave it at your subjects and make them transform! As already mentioned, early mornings and late afternoons, known as the golden hour, are ideal for capturing the enchanting glow on the waterfalls and foliage. Overcast days can be just as great, softening shadows and bringing out the colours. Just avoid harsh midday sun unless you enjoy blown out highlights and squinty faces. Keep an eye on the weather. A little drizzle can enhance the glistening effect of the falls!

Key Features to Photograph

Waterfalls and Cascades

The Glen Leigh side is a small part of the Ricketts Glen waterfall wonderland. Experiment with shutter speeds to capture the silky smoothness of flowing water. Try a slow shutter for that dreamy effect, or a faster one for a crisp, dramatic look. Each waterfall has its own personality, so take time to observe how the light interacts with the water as you frame your shots. Get low to the ground for unique perspectives, and don’t be afraid to get a little wet. Your camera probably won’t mind the splash!

Flora and Fauna

Don’t just focus on the falls; the surrounding flora and fauna are like nature’s confetti! Capture the delicate wildflowers, vibrant mushrooms and ancient trees that tell the story of this ecosystem. A macro lens can help you hone in on the intricate details of leaves or the texture of bark.

Essential Gear for Photographers

Cameras and Lenses

When it comes to gear, bring a camera that you are comfortable with. DSLRs and mirrorless systems are great choices for serious photographers. A versatile zoom lens (like a 24-70mm) gives you flexibility, while a wide-angle lens can capture the sweeping beauty of the falls. Don’t forget an ND filter if you’re planning long exposures; it’ll let you slow down your shutter speed even in bright conditions, helping you achieve that ethereal water effect!

Tripods and Stabilization Equipment

A sturdy tripod is your best friend for capturing those dreamy waterfall shots. It keeps your camera stable during long exposures, ensuring that your images are sharp and clear. If you’re on the move, consider a lightweight tripod that won’t weigh you down. If you’re feeling fancy, a gimbal can help stabilize your shots during video capture or when shooting in challenging conditions. Your future self (and your photos) will thank you for the extra support!

Tips for Post-Processing Images

Paid Or Free Software

By all means, pay for the photo editing software of your choice. MrsFaceless and I use a mix of paid and free software from an old version of Photoshop, Topaz DeNoise, Photomatix, Darktable and Gimp. The majority of our editing is now done in Darktable.

Basic Editing Techniques

Once you’ve snapped that perfect shot, it’s time to give it a little TLC in post-processing. Start with basic adjustments. Tweak the exposure, contrast and white balance to make your photos sparkle. Cropping can also help you refine your composition, so don’t hesitate to trim the edges if it means a more impactful image.

Enhancing Natural Colours and Textures

To make the vibrant colours of Ricketts Glen pop, use adjustment tools to enhance saturation and vibrance without going overboard. Sharpening can bring out textures in rocks and foliage, giving your images that crispness that makes viewers want to reach out and touch them.

Conclusion

In conclusion, photographing the Glen Leigh side of the Falls Trail in Ricketts Glen State Park offers a unique opportunity to capture the natural beauty of one of Pennsylvania’s most breathtaking landscapes. By understanding the best times to shoot, employing effective techniques and being well-prepared with the right gear, you can create stunning images that reflect the park’s enchanting atmosphere.
