We’ll concentrate here on the eastern side of the Finger Lakes, as that is where MrsFaceless and I spent our time. No doubt we will return and cover the western portion, maybe next year. Watkins Glen State Park
Watkins Glen State Park is basically the crown jewel of the Finger Lakes, boasting a gorge with 19 stunning waterfalls and trails that are more scenic than your last family vacation photos. The winding pathways and stunning rock formations create a magical backdrop that’s practically begging for a lens to focus on it. Just watch your step. Good shoes or boots are highly recommended!
Seneca Lake
As the largest of the Finger Lakes, Seneca Lake offers wide-open vistas and charming towns along its shores. From sunrise to sunset, the changing light creates an enchanting play of colours over the water. Capture the reflection of the clouds on the lake’s surface and you might just want to frame the photo next to your bed as a daily motivation.
Cayuga Lake
Cayuga Lake is another showstopper, with its long, slender body inviting photographers to explore its hidden nooks. The scenic drive along the eastern shore is dotted with parks, wineries and panoramic overlooks that can steal your breath away. Bonus points if you catch a local sailboat drifting by while the sun dips low. Now that really is a postcard perfect moment!
Taughannock Falls State Park
This Finger Lakes park boasts the tallest, single drop waterfall east of the Rockies. Located just north of Ithaca, Taughannock Falls drops an impressive 215 feet as the water cuts a gorge on its journey towards Cayuga Lake.
Robert H. Treman State Park
We had this park on our list as a backup location, something we could kill a few hours at during the day. In the end. this turned out to be our favourite photography location in the Finger Lakes. Robert H. Treman State Park has a fabulous mix of trails, gorges, waterfalls and stone paths and bridges that really do blend well together. They also make compelling images. Plus, it doesn’t seem to attract the crowds like some other places, which is really handy when taking photos!
Shequaga Falls
The town of Montour Falls is often called the southern gateway to the Finger Lakes Region. The Shequaga Falls waterfall is definitely worth a visit, but just be aware that there is very little, time limited parking. Access is also between two private properties. Composing anything other than the standard shot can be a little tricky here for those reasons, but MrsFaceless particularly enjoyed this waterfall.
Seneca Falls And Mill
A short drive north from Watkins Glen takes you to Seneca Falls and the remnants of the old Mill. The waterfalls here are a 40 foot, three section cascade, including part of the old mill spillway. There is a short and picturesque walk from the car park along a well maintained trail. For those with more time to spend, there is a further 20 foot drop waterfall, Cascade Falls, a little over a mile and a half downstream.
